Donald Trump Jr. is coming clean!
On Tuesday, POTUS’s eldest son released what he claims are screengrabs of the full email chain discussing plans to meet with a Russian attorney who allegedly had damaging dirt on Hillary Clinton.
Trump Jr. said he was sharing the correspondence “in order to be totally transparent” in a statement posted along with the three pages of emails between him and music publicist Rob Goldstone.
So, what exactly went down? Well, apparently one of Goldstone’s clients knew of a Russian government official who was offering to provide the Trump campaign with documents that “would incriminate Hillary and her dealings with Russia.”
The meeting was set up at the request of Goldstone’s client Emin Agalarov, a Russian pop star whose Kremlin-connected family has previously done business with Donald Trump.
Goldstone added in the email that the docs would be “very useful” to The Donald, noting:
“This is obviously very high level and sensitive information but is part of Russia and its government’s support for Mr. Trump.”
The then-candidate’s son replied to the email within minutes, writing:
“If it’s what you say I love it especially later in the summer.”
Geez, talk about damaging information! We have a feeling Junior will regret tweeting this all out…
The music publicist responded four days later, offering to arrange a meeting in New York with “The Russian government attorney.” Trump Jr. ecstatically responded, adding he would likely bring along “Paul Manafort (campaign boss)” and “my brother-in-law” Jared Kushner.
The female lawyer who attended the meeting, which took place at Trump Tower on June 9, 2016, has been identified as Natalia Veselnitskaya. She told NBC News she received a call from a man she did not know and was told to meet with the Trump campaign.
Unfortunately for the Trumps, Veselnitskaya says she has never worked for the Kremlin and didn’t have any dirt on the Clinton campaign, but says the Trump camp “wanted it so badly.”
While that lead may be a bust, the identity of the second person that Goldstone allegedly references in the emails has not yet been established. Hmm…
On Monday, deputy press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said that the President had learned about the meeting “in the last couple of days.”
The Kremlin said it was unaware of the meeting, as Vladimir Putin‘s spokesman told reporters that the Russian government “cannot keep track of every Russian lawyer and their meetings domestically or abroad.”
In addition to sharing the emails, Trump Jr. has agreed to share information about the meeting with the Senate Intelligence Committee.
See the emails — along with Junior’s statement — for yourself in the post (below).
