Although the authorities have only confirmed one death, local papers and the Associated Press speculate as many as 13 people have lost their lives due to the terror-driven crash. Please note an official death toll has not been released.

Per NBC News, Spanish authorities have noted:

“This is confirmed terrorist attack. We have activated protocol for terrorist attacks.”

According to witnesses, the van targeted people in pedestrian areas before coming to a complete stop. Other news outlets claim that while the driver fled on foot after the attack, two others associated with crime barricaded themselves into a nearby bar. It’s believed that they are armed and have hostages.

Thankfully, local police have located the van used in the attack. Sadly, as of writing this post, they have yet to locate the driver. The local police have since released the following image of a suspect:

Emergency services has requested that the train stations in the area close to the collision site be closed and ask people to stay away from the area for the time being.

First Lady Melania Trump has already weighed in on the tragedy as she posted on Twitter:

Supposedly, U.S. intelligence agencies (including the FBI) are in contact with the Spanish police concerning this particular attack. The US Secretary of State Rex Tillerson stated in a recent statement:

“We ask US citizens in the area to let your loved ones know you are safe.”
