It sucks to be Venus Williams right now.

On Saturday, the tennis all-star lost the Wimbledon title to Garbine Muguruza amid an emotional few weeks. As we previously reported, the top ranked athlete was involved in a nasty car accident last month where a man died because of the incident. Oof.

While footage of the crash has cleared Williams’ name, it hasn’t stopped the deceased’s family from looking into a wrongful death lawsuit. We have a feeling this drama played a part in Venus’ shocking loss during the Wimbledon final.

In fact, the 37-year-old started out strong as the celebrated American athlete was bidding to become the oldest woman in the Open era to nab a Grand Slam title. Sadly, Williams’ goal was derailed by Muguruza as she locked in a 7-5, 6-0 victory over Venus.

This is the Spaniard’s first Wimbledon crown, and it seems she can’t believe she beat a Williams sister to get it. After her major win, the 23-year-old gushed:

“When I was a little girl, I was watching these finals. I was watching Venus — I know it sounds incredible. To be able to play against her and now hold the big trophy, it means a lot.”

Awwww. And although this loss is likely a huge blow for Venus, the A-lister isn’t letting her disappointment shine through as she noted to the press:

“She just dug in there and managed to play better. She played really well. I mean, she played top tennis, so I have to give her credit for just playing a better match. … I’ve been in a position a lot of times this year to contend for big titles. That’s the kind of position I want to keep putting myself in. It’s just about getting over the line. I believe I can do that.”

Way to be a good sport, girl!
